BSU honored for water excellence

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2012) – The Florida Section of the American Water Works Association named Bonita Springs Utilities as winner of the 2011 Division 4 Water Distribution Award for excellence in water quality, operations records, maintenance, professionalism, safety, emergency preparedness and cross-connection control programs.
Richard Ratcliffe (left) presents the Water Distribution Award to Bonita Springs Utilities, represented by Distribution Supervisor Mike Prescott, Distribution Technicians Nick Donato and Don Woodruff and Warehouse Technician Mark Fountain.“I’ve been watching BSU for 20 years, and it is a very high-class system,” said Richard S. Ratcliffe, chair of the Florida Section AWWA. “BSU does a tremendous job and is a leader within the state of Florida.”
FSAWWA, which has 2,500 members, began the award program in 1997. No more than six awards are given in the state each year, one per division based on size. Division 4 includes utilities with 20,000 to 29,999 water connections BSU also won the award in 2009.
“Our employees work hard every day to make sure our member-customers enjoy a consistent, continual supply of top quality water,” said BSU Executive Director Fred Partin. “This award validates their efforts and ranks BSU among the best-performing utilities in Florida.”

BSU draws its raw water from underground aquifers and processes it in two facilities, a lime-softening plant and a reverse-osmosis treatment facility. The water from the two processes is blended for optimum taste and purity. During 2011, BSU produced nearly 2.6 billion gallons of potable water.
Bonita Springs Utilities is a not-for-profit water and wastewater utility founded by local citizens in 1971. Today, the member-owned utility serves more than 40,000 people through 25,090 connections to homes and businesses in a 60-square-mile area.
