Get acquainted with the BSU board members: Steve McIntosh

Local citizens founded Bonita Springs Utilities in 1971. Today BSU is a member-owned cooperative with an elected board of directors that oversees the utility’s operation. This is the first in a series of profiles of our nine board members.

Steve McIntosh has served on the BSU board since 2006 and may be the most recognized, since he also serves on the Bonita Springs City Council.

Steve and his wife, Connie, grew up in Greenfield, Ind., and began dating during his senior year in high school. They were married in 1967 and raised their son and daughter in six different states during Steve’s two-decade career with a Fortune 200 company. In 1994, they founded Tartan Consulting, which provides a worldwide client base with strategic planning, executive development and dispute-resolution services. Steve also is a Florida Supreme Court certified mediator, has taught graduate and executive education programs around the world and presents regularly at national conferences.

Steve and Connie began visiting Southwest Florida when Steve’s parents moved to Fort Myers Beach in 1975. They became full-time residents of Bonita Springs in 1995 and quickly became part of the community. Steve was a member of the charter class of Leadership Bonita. He served on the boards of the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, Speakers Assembly, Rotary and YMCA and was named both Rotarian of the Year and Chamber Director of the Year. He became familiar with BSU when he facilitated the creation of BSU’s first strategic plan in 2004.

Steve holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University and a doctorate in business administration from Kent State University, so it is no surprise that he appreciates the value of education. He joined the board of directors for the Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation in 2001, served as chair and now is chair emeritus. He led initiatives that increased the involvement and effectiveness of board members and created a scholarship that matched first-time alumni donations dollar for dollar with foundation board member contributions.

On the BSU board, Steve chaired the committee that researched alternative energy options for the utility and designed BSU’s first internship program.

When asked how he would respond to BSU’s critics, Steve said this: “People never complain about BSU’s water quality or reliability. When the only issue is rates, it’s an easy, baseless complaint. Bonita Springs is so fortunate to have a locally run utility with a professional staff, well maintained facilities and clean, safe drinking water. BSU is dedicated to protecting the environment, preserving natural resources and enhancing our quality of life.”

In 2010, Steve was honored with the 35th Citizen of the Year Award for the City of Bonita Springs. His Book, The Art and Science of Leadership, will be published in late 2011.

NOTE:  Steve served on the BSU board of directors from 2006 until 2012, when he did not run for reelection to allow more time with his family.

FAQ: Boil Water Notices
Boil water notices are common in Southwest Florida, caused by water main breaks, construction mistakes, disruptions at the water treatment plant and natural disasters like floods and hurricanes. The typical notice is issued as a precaution until water samples can be collected and analyzed.  CLICK HERE for answers to your questions.
