Frequently Asked Questions

What is the source of Bonita Springs Utilities' water?

BSU draws its water from the lower Tamiami aquifer, a thick sequence of porous limestone and clay beneath the earth's surface. This valuable resource provides the safest and highest quality water available in the area.

[top]

Is BSU a division of the City of Bonita Springs or Lee County?

No, we are not operated by Lee County or the City of Bonita Springs. BSU is a not-for-profit cooperative, owned by our member-customers and governed by a member-elected board of directors.

[top]

How do I arrange to start service to my home or business?

Call BSU at (239) 992-0711 five business days prior to closing on the property or moving. Please be prepared to provide your name, social security number, the property address and the date of the closing or move. Our customer service representative will provide information about your deposit at that time.

How can I pay my bill?

You have four convenient options:

  • Mail your payment to
    Bonita Springs Utilities, Inc.
    P.O. Box 2368
    Bonita Springs, FL 34133-2368
  • Your payment can be deducted monthly from your bank account through an automatic electronic fund transfer (EFT). Please call us at (239) 992-0711 to request the form to begin this service, or download it by clicking here.
  • Visit our office at 11860 East Terry Street, and pay your bill in person during business hours at our drive-though window or in our lobby. In the evenings and on weekends, there is a drop box, located on the south side of the building at the drive-through window, for your convenience.
  • Register for Online Account Access by clicking here and pay your bill online by credit card.

When is your office open?

Our lobby is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. We suggest that you call with routine inquiries during those hours. However, our telephones are answered around the clock to respond to emergencies. Please call (239) 992-0711 to report service disruptions, waterline breaks or other urgent matters.

[top]

What is the utility's billing cycle?

Bills are issued monthly. Each statement typically covers from 27 to 33 days.

[top]

Can we pre-pay our account?

Yes, simply send a check with your account number on it. Any amount that you pay above the amount shown on your bill will be credited to your account and applied against future bills.

[top]

How can I find my account number?

Your account number is listed on your bill; it is the number that starts the letter "L."

[top]

When are deposits refunded?

If the following conditions are met, your deposit will be refunded automatically after 18 months of continuous service:

  • * if there have been no checks returned by your bank for insufficient funds,
  • * if service has not been disconnected for non-payment, and
  • * if there have been no late payments.

[top]

Can deposits be waived for owners?

A property owner may have the deposit requirement waived by providing a letter of credit, including payment record, from another utility company. Deposit waivers are not offered to those renting their homes.

[top]

What is the base charge for a single-family home?

The base charge depends on the meter size and monthly service. The average home is equipped with a three-quarter-inch meter, with a monthly base charge of $10.39 for water and $24.11 for sewer service.

[top]

If we leave for the summer or an extended trip, do our bills stop?

No, even if the water is turned off, base charges for water and sewer service continue.

[top]

If we're away for an extended time, can our bill be sent to an alternate address?

Yes. Please note the new address on the return portion of your bill.

[top]

If we sell our property or move, what information should we provide to Bonita Springs Utilities? How far in advance should we call?

Five business days before the property closing or the move, please have your Realtor fax the following information to us at (239) 947-7460:

  • * The closing or moving date
  • * Your name and phone number the mailing address for the final bill
  • * The name and phone number of the new owners/tenants

The information also may be provided to us by phone at (239) 992-0711 or via e-mail to custserv@bsu.us

What are capital account credits?

BSU is not-for-profit community cooperative owned by its members. The IRS requires the utility to annually notify its members of the prior year's capital credit earnings. These earnings are allocated based on your bills. Members would be compensated for their capital credit earnings only in the unlikely event that Bonita Springs Utilities permanently ceases operation. Credits cannot be applied to current bills. If BSU closed, its assets would be used to first pay existing debts, and then to issue capital credits to its members. It is important to remember that these credits would be issued only if the utility closed, not if a member discontinues service.

When a member discontinues service, his capital credits remain, but an annual account update is no longer sent. To receive a distribution of assets based on capital credits if BSU closes, past members must keep current mailing addresses on file with the utility.

[top]

Can I assign my capital account credits to an heir?

Capital credit earnings can be assigned to your successor in interest or successor in occupancy by completing an assignment form available at the BSU office. A deceased member's capital credits can be assigned to the estate or the next-of-kin, as long as BSU has the name of a contact person and current mailing address on file.

How do I change my mailing address?

Download, complete, and return the form below or email the completed form or equivalent information to custserv@bsu.us.
