2007 Annual Report
Bonita Springs Utilities

2007 in Review

One of BSU’s most exciting projects of 2007 had a far-reaching impact. Six thousand children outside the United States die each day from drinking contaminated water. BSU Executive Director and Rotarian Fred Partin suggested the Rotary Club of Bonita Springs raise money to provide water-filtration systems to the people of Guatemala. BSU provided the seed money, and the Rotary Club multiplied it to $5,000. By partnering with Rotary clubs in Oregon and Guatemala and with a grant from Rotary International, the effort raised more than $50,000, enough to provide clean water to 11,000 people. What a ripple effect!

Here are some other highlights of 2007.

BSU’s drinking water was judged the best tasting in Southwest Florida during the sixth annual competition hosted by the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association. Judges evaluated room-temperature tap water for taste, odor, color and clarity. Director of Operations Mel Fisher (left) and Lead Water Plant Operator Tom Milazzo say the secret is the optimal blend of water produced through the traditional lime-softening process and water from the reverse osmosis facility.
Five members of a Rotary study-exchange group from France toured the BSU reverse-osmosis-water facility as part of a cultural and vocational exchange program. The group included a radio reporter, a business analyst for a think tank, a carpenter, a dairy farmer and a retired Rotarian. They learned how reverse osmosis removes salt from brackish water drawn from deep in the ground.

A record number of entries – nearly 500 – were submitted for the seventh edition of the BSU Water Conservation Calendar, which encourages member-customers to use water wisely all year long. These students’ drawings were choosen to illustrate the 2008 calendar (front row, standing, left to right): Jasmine Sandoval, Joey Gross and Mariana Ruiz; (back row): Ryan Thompson, Elanne Zuniga, Carla Garcia, Rebecca Szilagyi and Jessica Vargas-Medina. Carla, who was a Spring Creek Elementary School fifth grader, had her artwork selected for the sixth consecutive year, Jessica’s was chosen for the third time, and Rebecca’s for the second.

Bonita Springs Utilities Board Member Steve McIntosh, who also serves as treasurer of the Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation, gave FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw a tour of Bonita Springs, including a stop at BSU. (Left to right) BSU Executive Director Fred Partin (left) welcomed Dr. Bradshaw, along with Steve and BSU Board Member Hank Hochstetler.

BSU started construction on an Operations Service Center that will serve as a master-control facility for the utility’s water-production and wastewater-treatment facilities. The 22,500-square-foot building will include administrative offices, a training room, a shop area and warehouse space. It will house the utility’s field operations staff and, because it is designed to withstand 170 mph winds, can be used as an emergency operations center. The facility is scheduled to be completed by fall 2008. Gathered to celebrate the early morning ceremony to tilt up the center’s first wall were (left to right) Executive Director Fred Partin and board members Bob Bachman, Hank Hochstetler, Frank Liles, Steve McIntosh and Paul Attwood along with the BSU employees who will use the center.
