The past three years have been a time of great accomplishment for Bonita Springs
Utilities. In 2004, a new reverse-osmosis water treatment facility began
operations; it has and continues to perform admirably. In 2005, we broke ground
for the East Water Reclamation Facility, the last piece of major infrastructure
the utility needs to serve the Bonita Springs area through build out.
We weathered Hurricanes Charley and Wilma with no loss of service, a result of
BSU’s stringent construction standards, effective maintenance programs and the
dedication of our employees.
We continued to expand the central-sewer system, virtually eliminating septic
tanks in the densely populated parts of our service area. The expansion, which
began in 1997, has eliminated more than 4,500 septic tanks and allowed us to
shut down dozens of inefficient package plants, which provided often-inadequate
service to individual neighborhoods. This effort helped improve and continues to
protect water quality in Imperial River and the back bay. It also made
redevelopment of older areas possible.
All this work was inspired by our commitment to providing our member-customers
with the most reliable and highest quality services possible. BSU’s expansion
and accomplishments benefit not only newcomers to Bonita Springs but also those
who have made this wonderful area their home for many years.
I am very proud to have served as president of BSU during the past three years,
furthering the plans put in place by earlier boards of directors. I salute the
vision and leadership of current and past board members, the commitment of the
utility’s management and the excellent work of our employees.
