BSU Matures
Bonita Springs Utilities, Inc. has grown significantly during the past decades, maturing
into a progressive operation with highly technical equipment, sophisticated processes
and a professional staff. Compare the water utility that Harvey Haines and other Bonita
Springs visionaries began in 1970 to what BSU is today, and you can appreciate the
progress BSU has made.
In 1970 the utility borrowed $976,000 to begin the water system. The reverse osmosis
water plant BSU launched last year carried a $41 million price tag. Supplying potable
water to the utility’s initial customer base of 800 in 1972 was not easy. It’s no less easy
to serve BSU’s 30,000-plus member-customers today – but we’ve gotten better at it.
BSU’s service is so reliable that not even Hurricane Wilma interrupted it. The new
water plant is working so efficiently that BSU was able to sell nearly 291 million gallons
of water to other utilities during 2005.
The board of directors and staff continue to work together to meet the challenge of
continuing growth in our community, to maintain and improve the infrastructure
critical to reliable operations, and to protect and preserve the region’s valuable water
resources. As Harvey Haines leaves his position on the board of directors, we thank
him for his years of leadership and service, and we are determined to continue his
legacy of progressive service to our member-customers.
