Highlights of 2005
Despite power outages following Hurricane Wilma in late October, Bonita Springs Utilities provided uninterrupted service to its member-customers. BSU staff members worked closely with the Lee County Emergency Operations Center in planning for and dealing with the results of the hurricane. The utility provided nonstop service throughout the storm, and used generators in the days that followed to keep its 300-plus lift stations in operation. Power was restored to most of the utility’s 60-square-mile service area within three days.
During 2005, BSU installed an additional 2,600 backflow-prevention devices on member-customers’ water-service lines at no charge. The devices prevent possible contamination from water flowing backward through water meters into BSU water mains when there is a loss of pressure in the system. The utility is working to install a backflow preventer on every BSU water connection by 2008.

Spring Creek Elementary School third grader Carla Garcia’s “Save Water!” message is on the cover of the BSU 2006 Water Conservation Calendar. Carla’s artwork has been featured in each BSU calendar since 2003. More than 200 works were submitted for the fifth edition of the calendar, which encourages member-customers to use water wisely year-round. The initial idea for the calendar was developed during a 2001 brainstorming session with a group of the utility’s member-customers who now serve as judges in selecting the illustrations. This year’s judges were Bonita Springs residents Don Keylon, William Lonkart, Ken Shivel and Shirley Thompson. |
