2005 Annual Report
Bonita Springs Utilities

BSU Breaks Ground for New Facility

BSU Breaks Ground for New Facility

Bonita Springs Utilities began site preparation in March for its second Water Reclamation Facility, the last piece of infrastucture the utility needs to meet the ongoing needs of Bonita Springs. By the end of 2005, the facility was more than half done, with roughly 65 percent of the structural construction completed and nearly 80 percent of the necessary piping in place underground.

Katus Watson (far left) and Don Klose of CH2MHill, the firm that is managing the construction of Bonita Springs Utilities East Water Reclamation Facility, help with the March 2005 groundbreaking, with BSU President Bob Bachman (center), Executive Director Fred Partin and Director of Engineering Mike Liggins (far right).

When it opens in 2007, the facility will have the capacity to treat 2 million gallons of wastewater per day with a design that can be expanded to handle up to 8 million gallons per day. When it is fully expanded and operating in conjunction with the existing wastewater-treatment facility, BSU will have the capacity to handle all the wastewater produced by Bonita Springs once the area is fully developed.

Celebrating putting the last piece into place were (left to right) BSU Executive Director Fred Partin, Bill Beddow of CH2MHill, City of Bonita Springs Mayor Jay Arend, BSU President Bob Bachman and Lee County Commissioner Ray Judah.

CH2MHill serves as construction manager for the $58 million project, which includes the creation of 20 acres of wading bird habitat. Using membrane-bioreactor technology to reclaim wastewater, the plant will produce effluent for irrigation. Biosolids will be converted into pellets, which can be used as fertilizer.

The facility is located on 160 acres along the east side of I-75 north of Terry Street. During 2006, construction will be completed, equipment will be installed, and testing will begin.
