When it opens in 2007, the facility will have the capacity to treat 2 million gallons of wastewater per day with a design that can be expanded to handle up to 8 million gallons per day. When it is fully expanded and operating in conjunction with the existing wastewater-treatment facility, BSU will have the capacity to handle all the wastewater produced by Bonita Springs once the area is fully developed.

CH2MHill serves as construction manager for the $58 million project, which includes the creation of 20 acres of wading bird habitat. Using membrane-bioreactor technology to reclaim wastewater, the plant will produce effluent for irrigation. Biosolids will be converted into pellets, which can be used as fertilizer.
The facility is located on 160 acres along the east side of I-75 north of Terry Street. During 2006, construction will be completed, equipment will be installed, and testing will begin. |
