There are several things in this report that echo the utility’s 2004 edition. BSU fared well in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley in 2004 and again in 2005 following Hurricane Wilma. The students of Bonita Springs once more supported our annual Water Conservation Calendar – in fact, the cover artist has had her artwork selected for each of the past four calendars. The continuing theme of preparing for the ongoing growth of our region is repeated yet again. Our financial position remains strong, and even the board photo looks similar – each of the current board members has served since at least 2002, and none of us aged dramatically since last year’s photo.
Construction is another recurring focus. Last year we reported on the successful completion of one of BSU’s largest construction projects to date – the reverse-osmosis facility. In this report, you’ll learn about an even larger project – construction began on the new east water reclamation facility during 2005.
Another constant is the commitment of your board of directors to the BSU mission: to provide the best possible service to our member-customers at the most effective cost and to protect our water resources. The nine directors have a collective 137 years of board experience, and that experience and knowledge have served this utility well.
Next year’s report will be different.
Harvey Haines, one of the founding members of the utility and a board member since the board was established, retires in 2006. Not only will Harvey’s photo be missing from next year’s report, but his steady leadership on the board also will be missed. Harvey’s common sense approach, his good nature and his familiarity with the history of both BSU and Bonita Springs have provided a strong foundation for many of the board’s most important decisions.
Although Harvey is leaving the board, he’ll maintain his ties to Bonita Springs. Next time you see him, thank him for all he’s done for BSU and for all he’s done for our community.
